Summary
MultiplePokemon GOplayers have come forward to lament their loss of a Shiny Ho-Oh that they had worked hard for.Pokemon GOplayers are sharing sympathy with the fans and offering some reasons for how this could have happened.
Pokemon GORaid Battlesare a common way of finding and securing specific Pokemon. While walking around to find and capture Pokemon is a valid part ofPokemon GOgameplay, joining a Raid allows players to join up and fight a specific boss Pokemon. Once defeated, players are allowed to try and catch the Pokemon, but these players were robbed of their chances.

MultiplePokemon GOplayers, including Reddit user Sylvdrop, have lamented losing a Shiny Ho-Oh under terrible circumstances. In both cases, the players were fighting at a Gym Raid with a Shiny Ho-Oh being the boss and prize. However, before the players were able tocatch the Shiny Pokemon, the Gym abruptly transformed into a PokeStop. In Sylvdrop’s case, they won the fight and did attempt the catch, but an error from the game told them the Pokemon wasn’t found, and upon restarting, the Gym had been replaced with the PokeStop.
Why Did the Pokemon GO Gym Suddenly Change into a PokeStop?
The two players were confused as to this happened, and Sylvdrop was unsuccessful in getting Niantic Support to provide any help. Fellow players were sympathetic, and one offered a succinct explanation on what likely transpired.Niantic’s Wayfarer systemkeeps track of locations that are utilized in Ingress andPokemon GO.Pokemon GOsyncs with the Wayfarer system daily, and if the location is set to change or be removed, it will do so abruptly, and any raids in progress are interrupted or the awards end up not being awarded. The Wayfarer sync time is said to be around 11 am PT, so players may want to avoid engaging in raids around that time for safety’s sake.
Trainers haven’t been happy at this revelation. Players have pointed out thatPokemon GOhas been out for eight years, and this kind of issue still being a problem is irritating. Some fans have suggested that there should be a lobby safety net of sorts, so that for ten or twenty minutes following a raid, everyone can secure their rewards, even if the location has been changed and is no longer the Gym they were just fighting at.
This kind of headache is made worse by the fact that players can potentially lose their prize and waste their raid passes if they’re unlucky enough to engage in a raid during this window and the area is set to change. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the issue will see a fix since it’s been a problem for this long, but with enough outrage, perhaps Niantic will make a change.
