Summary
The Sims 5could be able to gain something valuable by remembering the rather unusual Smith family fromThe Sims 2. WhileThe Simshas featured a lot of family dynamics over the years, sometimes an extra twist is what’s necessary to make a family particularly memorable. Of course, the families themselves, default or user-made, only provide the base of the game. Where the main entertainment lies is in how the save plays out, and how drastically things can change from the starting point. Of course, this is greatly helped along when the player has an interesting starting point.
It’s difficult to ignorefamily mechanics inThe Sims, since almost every household that players will control will include them in one way or another unless they have a one-Sim household. Throughout the series, there has been a wide variety of family units to play with, from nuclear families, to siblings, to unrelated roommates, and so on. In almost ever case, each of the families has an additional quirk that sets them apart. For example, the Landgraabs are extremely rich and corrupt, while the Pleasant family is falling apart even before the game begins. It’s up to the player to ultimately decide what happens.

The Sims 2introduced players to one of the moreeccentric families inThe Simswith the Smith Family. Pollination Tech #9 Smith is an alien who retired to live on Earth, where he would marry Jenny Smith and have two children with her, Johnny and Jill. In general, the Smiths' family dynamic is not particularly unusual. Jill works as a nurse while Pollination Tech #9 stays home to watch over the house and the kids. Despite this, there is one obvious twist that makes this family unique, that being the fact that Pollination Tech #9 is an alien, with his kids being half-alien.
Aliens are not exclusive toThe Sims 2, and in fact, players have the ability toturn Sims into aliens inThe Sims 4. However, the Smiths being aliens by default is not a common sight for the series. This doesn’t have any real effect on the Smiths' lives, though. In terms of game mechanics, they have all the same possibilities available to them as any other Sim. It’s possible that more alien families could end up moving in withThe Sims 5, potentially even other species aside from Pollination Tech #9. Such a move would add a lot more toThe Sims 5on a creative level.
Bringing back the Smiths would do more than reintroduce a memorable family to the series' latest installment. It could also lead to anobvious content update forThe Sims 5. Introducing more space and alien-themed alongside The Smiths would bring a lot of value to the game. Perhaps Pollination Tech #9 could have some mementos from his home planet in the house, or souvenirs from interstellar vacations. On that note, maybe past vacation mechanics could be extended to let Sims visit other planets. Science fiction and supernatural elements are already present inThe Sims, so going all in on the idea isn’t far-fetched.
While the Smiths aren’t as famous as the Goths or the Landgraabs, they’re certainly a memorable family that would be fun to see again. They could also help usher in the kinds of creative optionsThe Sims 5fans should be wishing for. While Pollination Tech #9 and his kids are aliens, they’re not much different from their neighbors in the odd little town of Strangetown at the end of the day. The Smiths are a family that’s difficult to forget, and they could be a great influence on the future ofThe Sims 5.
