CD Projekt Red’s last entry in theWitcherseries,The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, catapulted the franchise to new heights, reaching a kind of critical and commercial success that the previous entries didn’t quite manage, even if they were still popular and beloved. Although the game’s release was followed up with some truly great DLC, things have been fairly quiet onThe Witcherfront since 2016. While the three main entries in the franchise to date served as a fairly well-contained trilogy of storytelling, players were still eager for more installments in theWitchersaga, and they were impatient for information on a new franchise entry.
Luckily that news came in March 2022, seven years after the release of the last entry. Details have been scarce, but CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a new game is in development. This will be the start of a new saga, igniting lots of questions from fans about when the game will be set and who will serve as its protagonist. With further confirmation that a new Witcher school, the School of the Lynx, will be introduced, it’s clear that the developer is looking to bring some big changes to the franchise in the next game. One change could be filling the world with even more Witchers, which could have some interesting consequences for the upcomingWitchergame.

Adding More Witchers
While the previous games featured more than one Witcher, the monster-slaying wanderers were still pretty few and far between. The majority of the games were spent with just theenigmatic white-haired wolf, Geralt, with some of his Witcher pals popping in and out occasionally. This suited the story and his character perfectly and showed how he found it hard to form attachments and preferred to work alone for the most part, and it also highlighted how Witchers were ostracized and isolated throughout their society. However, it could be good to mix things up and add a whole bunch of Witchers to the next game.
The tagline in the announcement for the next game “a new saga begins” yields lots of possibilities. It could mean that there is a large time jump between the events ofThe Witcher 3and the next entry, either sending the story years into the future or perhaps even serving as a prequel. It’s likely that the upcomingWitchertitle will move away fromGeralt and probably his companions too like Ciri, but then players are wondering who will step up to fill the protagonist void.

How This Could Affect The Game
The potential focus on the School of the Lynx could open up the possibility of even more new schools. This could be a great opportunity to expand the world ofTheWitcherand inject the game withmore Witchers from a variety of different schools, exploring this fan-favorite aspect of the series' lore. With more Witchers, it could give players the chance to recruit a selection as companions, or even create their own Witcher as a main character and pick the school that they belong to, fully customizing everything from their appearance to their fighting style and gear.
Even if new schools aren’t introduced, there are plenty of already established Witcher schools that could be shown in greater detail. There are a wide variety of Witcher philosophies that would differ fromthe School of the Wolfthat players have mostly seen up until now, and would present players with something fresh compared to the previous games. While theWitchergames are filled with fascinating characters like Triss, Yennefer, and Dandelion, the Witchers are arguably the best parts of the series. Showing how a larger community of Witchers could interact with each other, as well as the wider society would be a good change of pace from Geralt’s largely lonesome adventures.
A newWitchergame is currently in development.
