The Men, The Myth, The Legends
The Seven Luminaries get their name from their obvious affiliation to the Luminous Faith created by the True Vampire Lady Luminous; as well as the “classical planets” – the seven celestial bodies visible to the naked eye identified by early astronomers like Ptolemy. Having completely hidden themselves from public perception, they became the subject of myth and legend, which is why their appearance inThat Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slimeseason 3, episode 5, was such a big deal. Even among the highest-ranking officials of the Western Holy Church, only a few individuals have actually met them.
Initially, the Seven Luminaries were responsible for overseeing the activities of various organizations within the church and training the knights; tasksgiven to them by Luminous herselfprior to Hinata Sakauguchi’s arrival. Aside from the fact that the entire Luminous Faith was a complete invention of Lady Luminous, a True Vampire and Demon Lord, the actual goals and desires of the Seven Luminaries are made out to be enigmatic by those of faith, but they quite often orchestrate various incidents in order to protect their position within the church and as some kind of set of divine messengers. For example, Clayman’s servant,the undead known as Adalmannwas once a cardinal in the Western Holy Church known as the best practitioner of Holy Magic at the time; however, the Seven Luminaries feared that he’d become too powerful.
They sent him on an impossible mission in which he and many who revered him would die painfully in an encounter with the Dragon Zombie rampaging in the Jura Forest. Instead of working towards nurturing the talents of the devout and finding ways to have a positive impact on the futures of their successors, the Seven Luminaries became agents of sabotage within the Church. Due to their constant sabotage and fear of falling out of favour with the One God Luminous, the Church could never reach its current level of influence, with the Crusaders organization existing solely in name prior to Hinata Sakaguchi’s arrival.
In episode 5, after Falmuth’s Archbishop Reyheim gives his account of what happened on the battlefield during the intended invasion of Tempest, one of the Seven Luminaries, Ars, prods him about one more thing he needs to present to the meeting of the Ten Great Saints: the crystal orb containing a message from Rimuru to Hinata, despite the fact that she had already declared that they would no longer antagonize him.
On top of that, the Luminaries present Hinata with a sword known as the “Dragon Buster”, something capable of inflicting damage upon Veldora; however, it’s clear that there’s intent to force Hinata into a battle from which she may not return. As Hinata explains, since overcoming their Seven Trials with her “Usurper” Unique Skill, the Seven Luminaries are simply bored old men who put their noses into everything she does. Hinata already sees through them, and understands that they’re trying to use her to not just take out thelooming threat of Demon Lord Rimuruand the Evil Dragon, but to see to her own demise as well.
