The list for the 2022WWE Hall of Famecontinues to grow, with the likes of Undertaker, Big Van Vader, and “Queen” Sharmell on the card. Now, a legendary real-life brotherly duo is next to be inducted, but not the “extreme” team that many fans were expecting, but rather the legendary, technical brutes Rick and Scott Steiner, best known as “The Steiner Brothers.”
The surprise of the induction stems mainly from Scott, whose derogatory tirades againstWWE, its lack of a physical Hall of Fame, Vince McMahon,Triple H and morein years past are well-known to fans and wrestling pundits alike. Given that he is in fact being included in this induction alongside his brother Rick, it seems as if an accord of some sort has been reached between Scott and WWE.

The legend of the Steiner Brothers is a pair of storied careers that spans over three decades and a multitude of different wrestling promotions. As celebrated alumni of the University of Michigan in the 1980s, both Rick and Scott were accomplished grapplers on the amateur mats, and their coming together as a team in 1989 showed just how well they could take to the professional ranks, using a bevy of suplexes, throws, a strong technical game, and the awe-inspiring “Frankensteiner” finisher to tear up other teams in NWA’s Mid-Atlantic promotion, as well as NWA/WCW, capturing the WCW Tag Team Titles on seven different occasions before departing the Atlanta-based promotion for WWE in 1992. Upon their arrival, the Steiners would make an immediate impact, appearing on the very firstepisode ofMonday Night Rawand going on to WrestleMania IX, where they would battle and defeat the Headshrinkers to win the WWE Tag Team Titles.

The brothers would win those tag titles one more time before departing back to WCW in 1996, where they would have legendary encounters with the likes of Harlem Heat and Kevin Nash and Scott Hall of The Outsiders, the latter of which led to their infamous split in February 1998 when Scott turned on Rick to align with the nWo. The Steiners would continue their singles and tag wrestling careers for years afterwards, but Scott in particular would gain much notoriety in the back half of his career for his overly-enhanced physique and boisterous, eccentric stylings on the microphone, which more often than not would overshadow his matches and actual wrestling acumen. Simply put, when Scott speaks, fans listen, whether due to sheer interest or simply because Big Poppa Pump’s voice reaches further than anyone else.
In fact, the real allure in both of the Steiner Brothers being inducted this year into theWWE Hall of Fameis the anticipation of what Scott will have to say with a microphone in hand. It would be a rollicking roller-coaster of a Hall of Fame speech to be sure, but Scott’s penchant for over-committing to his character and going “off the rails” would have everyone in attendance be equal parts excited and nervous to see how it all pans out.
Lost in all of this is the second-generation Steiner, Rick’s son Bron Breakker, a headliner and former NXT Champion on WWE’sNXT 2.0program. It remains to be seen whether Breakker in fact had anything to do with the induction of his father and uncle, or if Scott will hold back on his infamous tongue-lashing mic skills for the sake of his nephew’s future career in WWE. In any case, this is one induction that will have many eyes and ears at attention.
