Summary
An update forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2has been issued that corrects the inclusion of a Cuban flag in the home of Miles Morales, who is Puerto Rican. Puerto RicanSpider-Manfans were especially disappointed to see the incorrect flag used and questioned how the mistake may have happened. While Insomniac hasn’t provided an explanation, it has now released an apology for the mistake alongside Thursday’sSpider-Man 2patch.
In Miles Morales' Harlem home, where he lives with his mother Rio Morales, there’s a large painting in the hallway of a flag. From launch until now, thatpainting was incorrectly the Cuban flag. The Cuban flag is notably similar in structure to the Puerto Rican flag but with a different color arrangement. This is, unfortunately, not the only instance where the flags were swapped. There were also banners that hung between buildings with the Cuban flag shown. Other parts of Spider-Man 2 correctly featured the Puerto Rican flag.
A message on Twitter from Insomniac Games explains that the studio sincerely apologizes for the error and that it understands that “accurate representation matters.” It also promises to ensure it does better in the future. The apology was made alongside the release of a new patch forSpider-Man 2, updating the game to version 1.001.003. The main fix in the patch is updating the incorrect Cuban flags to Puerto Rican flags.
While the flag controversy was the main focus of Thursday’sSpider-Man 2update, it wasn’t the only change. The patch also addressed another notable bug inSpider-Man 2that couldswap out character models like Miles Morales with a cube. Insomniac explained that this error could occur after “long play sessions,” but that it shouldn’t happen anymore after the patch.
Another strange bug that has been fixed inSpider-Man 2’s new patch has to do with the game’s The Amazing 2 Suit. This is one of thePeter Parker Spider-Man’s unlockable suitsin the game and is based on the suit fromThe Amazing Spider-Man 2film. For some reason, this suit’s logo would appear very bright, as if it were especially reflective. That bug has now been fixed.
It has now been just under a week since the launch ofSpider-Man 2on PS5. Other than thelaunch daySpider-Man 2update, this will be the first post-launch patch for the game. It’s a relatively small update, but it’s good that Insomniac addressed such important and prominent problems with the game quickly. Expect more granular bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements to be made in future patches as Insomniac has more time to loot into recently discovered problems.
