If there’s one thing that can be said aboutSkyrim, it’s that it’s certainly stood the test of time. WithThe Elder Scrolls 6allegedly still in pre-production, the fifth installment in Bethesda’s epic RPG franchise is still getting a lot of time in the spotlight. Much of this is due to the modding community, which is consistently pumping out new ideas at a rate of knots. Some of these go so far as to bring the decade-old title into the modern era.

As spotted by PCGamesN, user dTry has uploaded a new mod forSkyrimwhich seeks to overhaul one of the game’s biggest assets, namely the combat. Regardless of whether players like the fighting mechanics in the game or not, “Valhalla Combat” overhauls it to make it more like something a bit more contemporary. In the description, the modder describes this project as being inspired by the likes ofAssassin’s Creed: Valhalla,Elden Ring, andGod of War. A video shows the mod in action, and it does indeed look a lot more modern, with more fluid fighting, and the ability to parry and stun enemies.

Melee combat is essential in many video games, and the likes of the aforementioned titles are notorious for having good mechanics on this front. The good thing about “Valhalla Combat,” according to its creator, is that it works well in both first and third person. It’s also not finished yet, apparently as dTry apparently plans to keep adding to their mod, with the goal of making a much more “comprehensive combat system.” Plans are afoot to implement additional features, or perhaps even turn new ideas into separate mods themselves.

Skyrimhas a ton of modsthat have helped elongate the shelf life of this decade-old RPG. While the vanilla experience alone is already pretty vast, the fact that a whole community is out there, dedicating time and effort into adding to the world of Tamriel, is a testament to how beloved the game is. It’s also a testament to just how long it’s been out. Eleven years is a long time for any release, but it has provided players with a ton of custom ways to change the visuals or general gameplay.

As such,Skyrimis anopen world game with a lot of replay value. To many, it may seem a little dated now, but that’s where modding comes into its own. While Bethesda seems to be making slow progress on the next installment in the series, fans can at least get a lot of life out ofTES5.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
