Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella discusses the positive reception toTitanfall 2and whether a sequel may be in the cards for the titan vs. pilot game.
To say thatTitanfall 2has had a rough road towards success would be putting things mildly. Yes, the sequel had the advantage of amultiplatform release on both Xbox One and PS4, but its release date putTitanfall 2in a very tricky spot. Sandwiched betweenBattlefield 1andCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare,Titanfall 2never had a chance in a lot of gamers’ minds, but publisher Electronic Arts stuck to its guns.
Needless to say, the odds ofTitanfall 2hitting the type of sales marks of its competition are very low. Still, Respawn Entertainment founder Vince Zampella believes that a sequel could still be in the cards.
Speaking withGlixel, Zampella discussesTitanfall 2’s potential for a third iteration, and an EA spokesperson interjected, saying, “We’re committed to the franchise.” But, Zampella acknowledges, in a rather unfiltered way, that “committed to the franchise” is just a line. Of course Respawn Entertainment is committed to working on moreTitanfallgames; that’s the only game in development at the studio, as far as we know.
“The game is, critically, a huge success. We’re really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it’s too early to tell. We’d definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that we’ll explore more of it,”
As far as reviews and critical reception is confirmed,Titanfall 2is a success, and Zampella acknowledges that as well.Game Rant’s review ofTitanfall 2gave the game a 4.5/5 and praised the title’s refined multiplayer andnew single player campaign. Out of the three shooters that release in late October and early November,Titanfall 2seems to be the most surprising, even if it doesn’t have the clout of its competitors.
That clout unfortunately played intosales forTitanfall 2, though, which is already on sale for nearly half its recommended price. Zampella says it’s too early to tell as far asTitanfall 2’s sales are concerned, but many signs are pointing to the game falling short of expectations. Very few games go on sale within the first 30 days of release, and those that do are typically not half off.
Based on his quotes it sounds as if Zampella is well aware thatTitanfall 2was put into a tricky position financially, but his optimism suggests conversations are going on with EA as to how to continue with the franchise. With abetter release date,Titanfall 2’s release might have turned out differently, but as it stands a sequel is all gamers are going to be talking about for a while. There are definitely people out there who want to see aTitanfall 3, but willingness on the part of the developer will only get you so far.
Titanfall 2is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
