Summary
A talentedPokemonfan recently gave the popular Generation 1 creature Lapras an impressive past Paradox form. ThePokemonfranchise has seen several interesting variants over the years, with the most recent being introduced in 2022’sPokemon Scarlet and Violet. Paradox Pokemon are versions of certainPokemonbreeds from a particular time period, withPokemon Scarletfeaturing creatures from the distant past andPokemon Violetshowing players what their favorite monsters will look like in the far-off future. Each Paradox Pokemon has at least one different type from their contemporary relative, as well as a unique name to set them apart.
The Paradox Pokemon variants have naturally inspired fans to draw up their own past or future forms for Pokemon that haven’t gotten one yet. Some of the more recent examples are afuturistic Paradox version of Hoothootthat can manipulate time and space, prehistoric past variants ofPokemon Black and White’s starter trio, and even a majestic Paradox form for the legendary Lugia. With over a thousand different official Pokemon available as of this writing, these skilled fan artists have a vast pool of creatures to model Paradox versions after, and this has led to some interesting takes on some of the franchise’s oldest monsters.

One such example comes from Reddit user AshtroneTheArtist, who posted their stunning past Paradox Lapras concept to r/pokemon earlier this week. This prehistoric Water/Dragon-typeancestor to the modern-day Laprasis named “Drifting Song” and features a slightly darker color palette, horn-like ridges on its head, a longer unicorn-like horn above its snout, and larger bumps on its shell. AshtroneTheArtist also designed a Shiny variant for Drifting Song that swaps its blue skin with a burgundy tone.
Paradox Lapras Fan Art Design
The Water/Ice hybrid Lapras was one of the original Pokemon introduced inPokemon Red and Blue, and one was famously used by Ash Ketchum in thePokemonanime’s second season as a means of transport across the Orange Islands. This makes Lapras quite popular among longtimePokemonfans, who have celebrated itby crafting imaginative crochet dollsand models made out of bike chains. Artists have also designed regional variants of Lapras and drawn cute images of a baby Lapras meeting Mew among other impressive works.
As some of the users commenting on AshtroneTheArtist’s Reddit post have pointed out, Lapras would be a natural fit for a past Paradox form, as it already resembles prehistoric dinosaurs. It isn’t clear yet if Game Freak will ever revisit the Paradox mechanicin futurePokemongenerations, so for now fans have to make due with homemade Paradox forms for those who haven’t gotten an official one, and Drifting Song is certainly an inspired design for one of the franchise’s oldest Water types.
