Summary

ManyOverwatch 2fans miss certain features of the original game, leading some players to think up new ideas about how its classic 6v6 mode could be reintroduced. Released in 2022,Overwatch 2introduced many changes, most notably shifting the game’s format from 6v6 to 5v5, allowing each team one tank instead of two. While Blizzard, the game’s developer, explained that this was done to make aggressive team fights more viable, many fans of the series miss the original game’s signature feel and tempo.

Although it fared well with critics, sitting at a respectable 79 on Metacritic,Overwatch 2’srelease was controversial, causing uproar throughout the game’s community. While many were upset about the changes made to progression and Blizzard’s new approach to PvE content, the most divisive issue was the switch to 5v5. To make matters worse, Blizzard cut off access to the original game followingOverwatch 2’srelease, forcing its player base to adopt the radical new changes. Since then, players have adjusted to the change and some even prefer it over the original format, but that hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with new ways to implement the original 6v6 format inOverwatch 2.

One such fan, Redditor random-user772, proposed an interesting concept for the return of 6v6 toOverwatch 2. Firstly, they explain that the new 6v6 mode should have a 2-2-2 force lock, meaning that each team is forced to use two support heroes, two damage heroes, and two tank heroes, with the health points of all tanks being reduced by 50 to 150 HP. They further explain that this 6v6 mode should be confined toOverwatch 2’sArcade section since the format is so different from the now-established 5v5 format.

This health change to tank heroes is intended to offset the massive health pool that comes from having two tanks per team, which was one of the major factors that led toOverwatch 2’sswitch to 5v5. While this game mode would be an exciting addition forOverwatch 2fans, it’s hard to say whether Blizzard will ever implement something like this.

If the game mode were hugely successful, it could cause a rift within theOverwatch 2community and affect queue times for the main 5v5 mode. Now thatOverwatch 2has been released for over a year, the reintroduction of the original 6v6 format, just as the new 5v5 format is being solidified, could be damaging to the game’s identity.

However, the addition of a 6v6 mode could be a popular move for Blizzard to make, and following recent news surrounding thecostly shutdown of its high-profile Overwatch League, the developer could use some wins. Many fans probably wouldn’t care that most ofOverwatch 2’sheroes would be unbalanced in a 6v6 setting; they just want to return to the classic feeling of their favorite game.
