Avatar: The Last Airbenderis one of the most celebrated animated series in recent memory due to its blend of action, comedy, and influences from Asian cultures. A previous attempt to create a live-action version of the series came through M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 feature filmThe Last Airbender, though the film received disappointingly negative reception from both critics and audiences. Now, Netflix has been working on a live-action series based onAvatar: The Last Airbender, and five more cast members have been announced to be joining the series.

TheAvatar: The Last Airbenderlive-action Netflix series is being made in partnership with Nickelodeon and aims to retell the story of the original series. The series was first announced in September of 2018, and development was kickstarted by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original co-creators, executive producers, and showrunners ofAvatar: The Last AirbenderandThe Legend of Korra—though these original executive producers were eventually replaced by Michael Goi, Albert Kim, Roseanne Liang, Lindsey Liberatore, and Dan Lin.

Five new cast members have been added to the series: this includes Elizabeth Yu, an acting newcomer who will be playing the coveted role of the villainous Princess Azula. Joining Yu isWorkInProgressactress Maria Zhang as Suki, actress Tamlyn Tomita (who reprises Kumiko inNetflix’sCobra Kaiseries) as Yukari,Kung Fuactress Yvonne Chapman as Avatar Kyoshi, andBarking Wateractress Casey-Camp Horinek as Gran Gran.

These new cast members will be joining a slew of actors already in the cast including Gordon Cormier (The Stand) as Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell (Anne with an E) as Katara, Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why) as Sokka, Dallas Liu (PEN15) as Prince Zuko, Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0) as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience) as Iroh, and Ken Leung (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) as Commander Zhao.Avatar: The Last Airbenderis just one of many licensed properties receiving a Netflix series in the future; aPokémonlive-action Netflix series is also in the works, and new animated shows based onSonicandCupheadwill be available on the service in the near future.

Netflix’s live-actionAvatar: The Last Airbenderseries currently does not have a release date, but with a strong cast, the series is shaping up to be something truly special. It’s clear that both new and old fans ofAvatarwill have a lot to look forward to.
