Since launch,Mortal Kombat 11has been praised for its gameplay, but criticized for a number of other things. It’s been criticized for its use of microtransactions and the excessive grind required to unlock items, as well the lack of some fan-favorite characters like Mileena and Reptile. The game has also caught some flak for its choice tocast Ronda Rousey as Sonya Blade, but not just for Rousey’s poor voice acting performance.
Much has been said about Ronda Rousey’s voice acting performance inMortal Kombat 11, but some are upset at her casting for other reasons. In the past, Rousey has made controversial and politically-charged statements. For example, she once posted a conspiracy theory video on her Twitter account that claimed the Sandy Hook massacre - where 20 children and six adults were murdered - was a hoax perpetuated by the United States government. Initially, Rousey defended the Sandy Hook conspiracy theory video by saying, “I just figure asking questions and doing research is more patriotic than blindly accepting what you’re told.” Rousey would later issue an apology for the tweet.

Another reason why some are upset about Rousey’s casting as Sonya Blade inMortal Kombat 11has to do with comments she made about transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox, which some believe to be transphobic. Rousey said to The New York Post about Fallon Fox, “She can try hormones, chop her pecker off, but it’s still the same bone structure a man has. It’s an advantage. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Those two controversies seem to be the main reasons why some people are against Ronda Rousey playing Sonya Blade inMortal Kombat 11. However,Rousey’s poor voice acting performance as Sonya Bladehas seen its fair share of criticism online as well. Based on social media comments andMortal Kombat 11reviews, it seems safe to say that the general consensus is Rousey didn’t do a great job as Sonya Blade, and some think it’s unfortunate that she was hired instead of an actual voice actor.
Unfortunately for Rousey’s detractors, it doesn’t seem as though she is going anywhere soon. Since her dominant UFC winning streak, Rousey has maintained a celebrity status thanks to her recent run in WWE, appearances in movies, voice acting gigs in video games likeMortal Kombat 11, and more.
Mortal Kombat 11is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
