French developer Dotemu, in association with SNK, has announced the newest title in theMetal Slugseries,Metal Slug Tactics, offering a new spin on an iconic arcade classic. TheMetal Slugseries has prided itself on its fast-paced running and gunning action in previous entries, offering players various weapons and tanks to dismantle the opposition.

InMetal Slug Tactics, players will need to strategically dispatch their units to place themselves in advantageous situations, similar toother tactical RPGs including theXCOMseries.Fans of theMetal Slugseries will be pleased to discover that the sprite-based graphics, as well as its over-the-top violence, seems to blend well within a genre that’s outside of what the franchise is known for.

The gameplay trailer features the returning cast of Marco, Eri, Fio, and Tarma, each of whom appears to have a special class assigned to each unit. One of the gameplay features highlighted in the trailer is “Sync,” which appears to be a method of units linking actions into another within a sequence.

Metal Slug Tacticsalso promises “roguelike” elements, incorporated with its base tactical RPG gameplay, which means that players will more than likely expect to lose while still finding ways to maintain their progress. Generated levels, which are also elements of roguelike-style games, are also expected to make their way inTactics, allowing no two playthroughs to be exactly alike from each other.

While a tactical RPG may be unique for the series, it isn’t the first time thatMetal Slughas branched out into other genres. In 2014 and 2016,Metal Slug DefendandAttackwere tower defense games released on mobile, with anothermobile gamecurrently in development. The main characters Fiolina Germi, Marco Rossi, and the Mars People, a recurring enemy type, have made guest appearances inThe King Of Fighters Maximum Impact 2,Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, andSNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaosrespectively.

Currently,Metal Slug Tacticsis slated to release only on Steam, although fans shouldn’t rule out a console release as it may be revealed later. This was also a similar case withTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, another game that Dotemu is working onthat was recently confirmed for the Switchalongside its Steam release. While it has been almost a decade since the last non-spinoff release, fans ofMetal Slug, its cartoon violence, and visuals, will have an interesting game to look out for upon release.

Metal Slug Tacticsis currently in development for PC.
