TheMario Bros.theme music is up there with theTetrisandZeldathemes as one of the most iconic and recognizable songs in the history of gaming. Although theMario Bros.theme has always been instrumental in the games, Nintendo actually signed off on official lyrics to the song back in the 80s. As gamers might expect from Nintendo and the 80s; the resulting lyrics are incredibly weird and entertaining.

The lyrics were created for and decided by a Japanese radio show contest that gave fans the chance to write original lyrics for the song and send them in for consideration. After scouring the results and selecting a winner,Nintendoactually endorses the Go Go Mario sing-a-long and released the track on vinyl.

The track is obviously in Japanese, but it is definitely still worth a listen even if you don’t speak the language. English speakers can find the translation below the video…

Today, full of energy, Mario is still running, running

Today, full of energy, Mario runs

Today, full of energy, searching for coins

Goomba! Troopa! Buzzy Beetle! Beat them all!

Mario is always full of energy and strong!

[Spoken] The only one who can reverse the spell that has captured the Mushroom People is Princess Peach. But Princess Peach is hidden underground, in a far-off castle. Ah, the days of peace… if we could once more return to those days… to save Princess Peach and bring peace back to the Mushroom Kingdom, that is why Mario is on his journey today.

Go and beat the Koopa tribe, go!

He’s made it to the castle and gets fireworks!

Lightly sidestepping the Hammer Bros.

Show the last of your power, Mario!

It’s been a long journey but it’s nearly at an end

Princess Peach says “Thank you”

Mario’s adventure is over for now, but

Mario’s dream lives forever…

Although the lyrics will likely never be used in another official Nintendo product, they are still a great piece of trivia knowledge and an amazing snapshot of the weirdness of the 80s and the early days of Nintendo’s success and rise to stardom. TheMario Bros.were only just beginning to become a household name and it’s hard to imagine the hype that must have been sweeping the globe as home console gaming became more accessible, affordable, and popular.

What do you think of the officialMario Bros.music lyrics? Do you plan to store it away in the trivia vault or immediately purge the weirdness from your memory banks? Let us know in the comments.
