LEGO games have a tendency to follow a certain formula, as fan-favorite franchises like Marvel and Harry Potter get a slightly blocky facelift with added doses of camp thrown in. The games are often fun, action-packed, and slick, with engaging levels and not too challenging gameplay. They’re perfect for existing fans of IPs, with a whole host of nods and winks back to the source material that even the most casual fans will enjoy, and they help to expand the worlds of beloved series beyond their purely visual mediums. Whilethe LEGO gameshave evolved through the years, they’ve maintained their tongue-in-cheek humor and self-referential silliness throughout, and theLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais no exception.

While the Star Wars films have a sprinkling of humor throughout, LEGO really ramps up the comedy in its much more lighthearted versions of the movies.LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagacombines a more freeform approach to the story campaigns compared to previous titles with a vast open-world for players to explore, bringing the nine Skywalker-focused films together in one epic journey. The darker moments of the films' stories are still present in some fashion, and there are surprisingly emotional aspects given the aesthetics, butLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais definitely more focused on its slapstick antics, sight gags, and humorous dialogue choices. Although there is a healthy amount of humor throughout, there are a few moments that stand out more than others.

Obi-Wan’s Pad

While there are a lot of more memorable and almost straight-from-the-films visuals throughoutLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the game also takes the opportunity of adding plenty of content as well. Whether this is in the form of new locations or just original takes on places players have seen before,LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagaputs its own twist on the worldofStar Wars. A humble – but no less great – location is Obi-Wan’s abode, which Luke visits in theA New Hopeepisode. His home is adorned with various paraphernalia pointing to his adventurous past that players and viewers will know from the prequel trilogy, but Luke’s innocent perusal of the photographs and his guileless inquiries about the fate of his father adds another layer to the scene. Obi-Wan’s grimace at the question also brings a few chuckles as well.

Dance Break

A defining moment of the prequel trilogy is the montage of Jedi slaughter all over the galaxy as Emperor Palpatine finally puts his long-awaited plan of betrayal into action. This climactic moment signals the start of a darker period for the galaxy as a whole and clears the way for the Empire to take over, butLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagamanages to add a moment of levity to the massacre. Just as the tide starts to turn against Obi-Wan and his allies, Palpatine executes Order 67.Star Warsfans will know this is one digit offthe infamous Order 66, and instead of causing the clone troopers to take out the Jedi, it triggers a coordinated dance routine instead.

A Touch Of Foreshadowing

Alongside the epic battles, dramatic scenes, and narrative flourishes,LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais full of smaller momentsthat might elicit a chuckle or two. With nods to other entries and later plot points throughout each section, fans have plenty to entertain them alongside the more obvious jokes. During the Revenge of the Sith episode, if players leave Anakin to his own devices for long enough, his lightsaber will flicker from blue to red. Anakin will smack his glitching weapon a few times to return it to its more benevolent hue, but the reference to his upcoming slide to the dark side is a funny bit of foreshadowing.

The High Ground

TheStar Warsfilms have launched a million memes, with humorous instances capturing the hearts of modern audiences and transcending their original medium into a more bite-sized format. The prequel trilogy, in particular, is a fertile source of comedy gold, with its slightly misguided moments and memorable comments about the coarseness of sand. The relationship between Obi-Wan and his Padawan-turned-nemesis is as heartbreaking as it can be humorous and provides some great comedy fodder. The epic battlebetween the two friends inRevenge of the Sithhas a lot of the same dialogue as the film, but LEGO presents it through its trademark comedic lens. Obi-Wan’s remark that he has the high ground, only for the camera to pan out to show him on a literal ladder, undermines the pathos of the scene in all the best ways.

Masters Of Disguise

It’s fair to say thatthe Death Star rescue missioninA New Hopeis not the most carefully planned of endeavors. The ragtag bunch of would-be heroes are very much winging it, andLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagacaptures the air of improvisation from the film perfectly. Stormtroopers may not be the most cunning of foes, but the ridiculously inept antics of Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewie as they evade capture takes the cake. Their terrible hiding places and unconvincing disguises, from a flower to a suspiciously human-shaped lamp, add to the hilarity of the scene. However, it’s Chewie’s impression of a bearskin rug that really takes center stage.

Ultimate Fanboy

The more recent trilogy of films in theStar Warssaga might lend themselves less organically to LEGO’s formula, with fewer laughs and a decidedly less campy sensibility, butLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagastill manages to find plenty of humor in the three films. From Kylo Ren’s petulant personality to BB-8’s adorable antics,LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagapacks lots of gagsinto the gameplay. One particularly popular target for its jokes is Kylo Ren’s infamous shirtless scene. His fanboy fanaticism for his grandfather Darth Vader is pretty funny anyway, butLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagatakes this to another level with the ‘I Love Vader’ shirt Kylo Ren wears. After Snoke tells him to “take that ridiculous thing off” (a line in the films that refers to Kylo’s helmet), Kylo flexes his pecs and goes shirtless instead.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Sagais available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
