Mortal Kombatco-creator Ed Boon says he would love to do a crossover withKiller Instinct, but concedes the title would have to be an Xbox One exclusive.

Responding to a fan recommendation for a potentialMortal Kombatcrossover, series co-creator Ed Boon acknowledged that he loves theKiller Instinctfranchise, but any possible crossover between the two properties would end up being an Xbox One exclusive as a result. Given that theKiller Instinctreboot has been a Microsoft project from the ground up, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. But the fact that Ed Boon specifically mentioned the franchise is interesting news for fans waiting to hear about the nextMortal Kombat.

Of course, the off-hand tweet isn’t any sort of confirmation that Boon and NetherRealm Studios are working on a crossover, but it does indicate that Boon is not only thinking about potential crossovers, but also has thought about what it would mean for the series in terms of exclusivity.

On a smaller scale, it’s not a far-fetched idea to think that aMortal Kombatcharacter might feature in the pre-existingKiller Instinctfranchise, since the rebootedKiller Instinctseems to beMicrosoft’s own version ofSuper Smash Brosin terms of tying in characters from different intellectual properties. While the guest characters so far have come from other Microsoft properties likeGeneral Raam fromGears of WarandArbiter fromHalo, it wouldn’t be a stretch for the studio to extend beyond this, much like Nintendo did when they brought in third party characters like Sonic the Hedgehog or Solid Snake.

TheMortal Kombatseries was briefly involved with a potential television-based crossover project withStreet Fighterback in 1997, but those plans fell through. While a crossover withStreet Fighterwould certainly help bolsterlackluster sales for Capcom’s fighting franchise, Boon only mentionedKiller Instinctwhen speculating about crossovers for his series. It’s worth noting that this speculative title would likely also launch for PC, under Microsoft’sXbox Play Anywhereinitiative.

In any event, Ed Boon will be busy for the time being finishing production onInjustice 2, the sequel to the popularGods Among Usfighting game based in the DC Comics realm. The game wasrevealed shortly ahead of E3 2016, and introduces new elements to gameplay likestat-boosting loot drops. WithInjustice 2scheduled to drop next year, it looks like any potentialMortal Kombatcrossover is the subject for a distant release.
