For some time now,Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mysteryplayers have been wondering who the Dark Wizard is in the game. The Dark Wizard, for the uninitiated, was an unknown wizard in a red cloak who attacked the player character in the Courtyard area, but recent story content has finally revealed his identity. Anyone curious as to who the Dark Wizard is can keep reading, but anyone else will want to be wary ofspoilers.
In Year 4, Chapter 15 “A Dark Secret,” we learn that the Dark Wizard is none other than Ben Copper. Ben Copper is a Gryffindor student inHarry Potter: Hogwarts Mysterywho is similar to Neville Longbottom from the novels, in that he seems to have high anxiety and is generally afraid of things. The player character’s best friend Rowan Khanna is suspicious of Ben Copper for various reasons, and now it appears Rowan’s suspicions have been confirmed.
However, just becauseBen Copperhas been unmasked as the Dark Wizard inHarry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, it doesn’t mean he is the mysterious “R,” who is the presumed main antagonist of the game. After all, when players beat the Dark Wizard in a duel and discover it’s Ben, Ben is confused and appears to not remember anything. Unless Ben is just putting on an act, we have to consider the possibility that he was under the influence of the Imperius Curse.
InHarry Potterlore, the Imperius Curse is an unforgivable curse that is used to control people. It’s very likely that Ben was under the control of the Imperius Curse when he acted as the Dark Wizard, but if that’s the case, which character cast the curse on him?
As we see it, there seems to be two distinct possibilities. The most likely culprit is none other than Madame Rakepick, who happened to show up just in time to save the player character from the Dark Wizard. Rakepick’s motivations have been called into question by other charactersover the course of Year 4, including Professor Snape, so it’s not out of the question that she will be properly revealed as a villain sooner rather than later.
Another, less likely possibility is that the person who cast the Imperius Curse on Ben Copper is Rowan Khanna. There is afan theory that Rowan Khanna is “R,“and if that theory holds any weight, then it would make sense for Rowan to try to frame Ben. Whether or not that big twist comes to pass remains to be seen, however.
