Grand Theft Auto 5has alreadyshipped over 60 million copies, as PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One and players just can’t get enough of the criminal sandbox game. But according to fresh rumors, the Rockstar Games hit could be about to come to a brand new platform.
That information comes from the Internet’s gaming rumor mill, NeoGAF, where a poster named Vern continues to tease a Nintendo Switch port ofGTA 5. After another user said that “no one” asked for theNintendo Switch version ofL.A Noireand asked why Rockstar isn’t making aGTA 5port instead, Vern replied with “patience.”
After fans took the reply and ran with it, Vern was forced to step in and explain that this is in no way a confirmation thatGrand Theft Auto 5is coming to the Switch. Rather, Vern’s “most reliable source,” said that “more from R* is in development” and although the source wouldn’t confirm which game or when it would be released, “[Vern] was told it shouldn’t be a surprise what title it is.”
It’s not hard to see why many are holding on to the idea that the Los Santos-set sandbox could come to the Switch. Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two has pledged itssupport for the new Nintendo console, with sports simsNBA 2K18andWWE 2K18coming to the platform.L.A Noireis only the first Rockstar game that the company has announced for the Switch but it too must have a lot of love for the console to include it in its re-release plans.
It also stands to reason that Take-Two and Rockstar could make an awful lot of money from a Switch release ofGTA 5. Not only do fans love the prospect of playing through the game’s story missions on the go, but the ability to playGTA Onlinein transit is welcome too.GTA Onlinecontinues to be a top earnerfor Rockstar and Take-Two, and bringing it to the Switch could maximize the companies' profits even more.
The release would make good business sense then, but it’s unclear how soon it will become a reality.GTA 5is not a small game and support for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game ended because of a lack of room on the two consoles. Rockstar would need to overcome this and any other technical hurdles before announcing a port, but the possibility is still exciting.
