A risky overseas voyage and a prophesized fate face the young and innocent Fena inCrunchyrolland Adult Swim’s upcoming anime seriesFena: Pirate Princess. On June 16th, Crunchyroll released exclusive information on the anticipated anime including behind-the-scenes images, cast details, and a new official trailer.
Crunchyroll says the show will center around “positive” and “cheerful” orphan Fena. Unfortunately, she cannot recall much of her childhood before she began working as a servant in a brothel. As she grows and her age becomes a threat to the brothel, a marriage is arranged for the young girl. In an attempt to escape her marriage, Fena escapes toan island of pirates, where she is faced with the reality of her childhood and family history. In a struggle to escape those that wish to harm her, she takes her destined place in her father’s footsteps as captain of a bold and talented Samurai crew.

The short officialFena: Pirate Princesstrailer, released by Crunchyroll, is a litany of contradicting images. Shots of the pale, beautiful, silver-haired Fena are juxtaposed with strong images of explosions, violence, and gore of the pirate lifestyle. Sharp contrasts in animation style further differentiate the characters, with the titular heroine drawn in a soft and beautiful style, similar toViolet Evergreen, while more sinister characters are drawn more harshly in astyle similar toAttack on Titan.
Fena: Pirate Princessfeatures talented Japanese director Kazuto Nakazawa, known forParasite Dollsand the anime sequence inKill Bill: Vol. 1. Fena herself will be voiced byAsami Seto ofJujutsu Kaisen. Additional voice actors among Fena’s crew include her family member Yukimaru (Ryota Suzuki), warrior Shitan (Takahiro Sakurai), tech geek Karin (Aoi Yuuki), and mischievous twin fighters Enju (Gen Sato) and Kaede (Ryota Osaka), among others. Crunchyroll released sketches and behind-the-scenes images of these characters and more, all of which can be found on their website.
Since 2019, when Crunchyroll and Adult Swim made a deal to team together on new creative works, the two have announced numerous projects such as the animated seriesBlade Runner: Black Lotusand more that have yet to come out. Adult Swim’s anime has earned more respect over the years, with creative direction onnew shows likeUzumaki. With Adult Swim’s popular late-night Toonami TV program, the alliance gives fans more access to new and old anime shows.Fena: Pirate Princessis no exception and will be one of the first shows to be released under the duo.
