On September 29th, Electronic Arts releasedFIFA 18for the Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, anyone that took this as a sign that EA would be supporting Nintendo’s handheld/home console hybrid on a long term basis would have been mistaken, as the company currently has no Nintendo Switch games in development.

According to Wall Street Journal reporter Sarah Needleman, EA won’t be dedicating any more resources to Nintendo Switch development until it can determine how worthwhile it was to bringFIFA 18to the console. EA will make its decision regarding Nintendo Switch game development in March, after the system has been available for a full market year.

While we won’t know until March what decision EA makes about the Nintendo Switch, right now, things aren’t looking good forFIFA 18on the platform. Concrete sales data for the title in all regions isn’t available at the time of this writing, but we do know that the Nintendo Switch version of the game accounted forless than 3% of the game’s salesin the UK at launch.

However, some may argue that EA judging the viability of the Switch byFIFA 18’s sales isn’t exactly fair. After all, EA didn’t really try its hardest with the Switch version of the game, releasing a product that had far less features than its counterparts on other consoles. In fact,FIFA 18on Nintendo Switch doesn’t even allow players to invite their friends to online games, forcing players to stick with random matchmaking instead.

If that weren’t bad enough,FIFA 18on the Switch seems to beplagued by weird glitchesand other technical issues not present in other versions of the game. Between its glitches and general lack of content, it’s no wonderFIFAfans decided to buy the game for platforms other than the Switch.

Perhaps if EA put more effort into the Nintendo Switch version ofFIFA 18, it would have been more widely adopted by Switch owners. In the meantime, other third party developers have recognized the console’s potential, with Bethesda in particular throwing its support behind the Switch. If the Nintendo Switch continues to do well, maybe EA will resume development for the system, regardless ofFIFA 18’s sales numbers.

FIFA 18is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
