The new trailer highlights much of what makes the game itself so endearing: that is a blend of magical creatures, monsters, adventure, and a ragtag group of heroes who are tasked with saving the world. Chris Pine’s character, who appears to be a bard, narrates the trailer, hinting that he and his band of thieves “helped the wrong person steal the wrong thing,” which seems to have unleashed a great evil upon the world.
The trailer is chock full of easter eggs and hintsat lore that will likely get fans excited. This includes plenty of classic creatures like the owlbear, the gelatinous cube, and even a mimic that almost takes a bite out of Rodriguez’s character. There are also plenty of the titular dragons included as well. Beyond that, there appear to be plenty of different settings that are home to threats the heroes must face, all scored by Led Zeppelin’s classic “Whole Lotta Love.” Zeppelin themselves may predateDungeons and Dragons, but much of their music was inspired by fantasy writing (mostly the works of J.R.R. Tolkien).
Judging by what was shown in the trailer, this version ofDungeons and Dragonsseems to be going for a much more lighthearted and adventurous tone than the 2000 movie version of the game. That particular film was met with a wide amount of critical derision upon its release. Since then,Dungeons and Dragonshas had something of a renaissance, becoming far more popular among mainstream audiences. The game has played a crucial role inStranger Things, which went back to its roots in making the game a bigger part of its story in its latest season. Whether someone is a longtime player, or completely new to the franchise, the movie looks like it will at least be a lot of fun when it hits theaters next year.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thievesis scheduled for a March 2023 release.
