Microsoft was full of surprises at E3 2018, keeping its showcase moving at a fast pace while focusing largely on upcoming games. In addition to revealing major third-party titles likeDevil May Cry 5andCyberpunk 2077, Microsoft also showed off a few first party games which includedForza Horizon 4and the mysteriousHalo Infinite. Whilethe short teaser trailershowed off Master Chief, it didn’t do a good job of letting fans know exactly what the game was. Two months later, fans finally have an answer as Microsoft confirms whatHalo Infiniteactually is.

During a recent Mixer broadcast, 343 Industries' own Jeff Easterling went on record to confirm thatHalo Infiniteis indeedHalo 6, the next chapter of the long-running story. Speaking to fans during the latest 343 Social Stream, Easterling said that fans shouldn’t think of the upcoming game as a prequel story; it is intended to be the next piece of Master Chief’s story even though it doesn’t follow the same numbered title sequence of previous games.

While details and gameplay are still scarce, Microsoft has previously revealed thatHalo Infiniteintends to move back to its roots byfocusing the story solely on Master Chief.Halo 5: Guardianssurprisingly split most of the campaign between the aforementioned Chief and newcomer Agent Jameson Locke and his Fireteam Osiris. Naturally, this perspective shift proved to be a point of contention for fans who wanted to spend more time with the legendary Spartan. 343 clearly received a ton of feedback on this topic and appears to have acquiesced to fans' wishes.

Ultimately, the impressive E3 teaser primarily gave fans a quick look at the new game engine being used forHalo: Infinitenamed Slipspace. As to what the game actually is, no one outside of Microsoft is entirely sure with speculation revolving around the idea that it could be an open world game or that it’ll join the growing trend and include a Battle Royale mode. One of the biggest rumors, however, is the idea thatHalo Infiniteis being developed in two partswith the single player side arriving next year and multiplayer following a year later in 2020.

Halo Infinitewill be released on PC and Xbox One. A release date has not yet been announced.
