Looter-shooter titles likeDestiny 2often rely on players defeating large numbers of enemies for progression, however, a section of the community is stating their frustration regarding the number of kills required to activate Exotic weapon Catalysts. Exotic weapons are potent variants of thevarious Legendary weapons found inDestiny 2that come equipped with a special perk, allowing players to execute stronger attacks on an enemy or apply unique effects. These weapons have definedDestiny 2’s build diversity for a long time and will continue to do so in the future.

Exotic weapons are unique pieces of gear that can dip into specific roles and be quite potent in lethality and utility, especially in the hands of an experienced guardian. Exotic weapons come with Exotic perks allowing further synergy with class-based skills and subclass-specific verbs, such asDestiny 2’s infamous Fallen Sunstar build. While Exotic perks are intrinsic to Exotic weapons, only a few amongDestiny 2’s expansive Exotic arsenal possess a Catalyst which functions as a Masterwork upgrade, allowing the weapon to either gain a boost in stats or improve its Exotic perks.

Obtaining an Exotic Catalyst is simple enough as most can be earned through playlist activities or specific quests. However, to activate the Catalyst, players have to defeat a pre-determined number of enemies, with mostDestiny 2Catalysts needing several hundred kills. Players like Blackfang08 on Reddit have raised their frustration regarding the redundant system that forces players to engage in such a tedious activity. The player exclaims that the process would be much more enjoyable if players could use the Catalysts by simply acquiring them.

Several players in the comment section state similar opinions, mentioning how mindlessly grinding kills erases any excitement of using the Catalyst-empowered weapons. Many players have noted that the kill-based objective is there to ensure that players are well-adjusted to the unique mechanics of the weapon. As a rebuttal, several players have mentioned that the newer Catalysts require players to use the weapon extensively during the acquisition process, thus rendering the previous point redundant. One player points out how the kill-based objective isa remnant fromDestiny 2’s Year 1, a system that hasn’t been updated since.

It is common for MMOs to have radiant quests where players have to complete arbitrary tasks to make up for the gap in vertical progression or as filler content, andDestiny 2is no different in this aspect. However, Bungie has previously changed or reworked mechanics when faced with passionate player feedback. AsDestiny 2prepares its mid-Season 21patchto improve several Exotic weapons, players shouldn’t be surprised if the developers decide to update the Catalyst system in a future patch.

Destiny 2is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
