The past few months have seenDestiny 2change a lot, with the introduction of its free-to-play version,New Light, and its latest expansion,Shadowkeep. More than those, it’s the increased focus on seasonal story and gameplay updates that have shaken up theDestiny 2experience so far, and will shake it up even further in the seasons to come.
This seasonal approach was the topic of an article by the Daily Star this week, wherein the publication talked withBungie about its split from Activision last year. They touched upon how the studio has experimented with telling ongoing stories across multiple seasons withDestiny 2’s last two seasons, Season of the Undying and the ongoing Season of Dawn. Without divulging any spoilers, producer Rachel Levine teased that Bungie is going to continue experimenting and is “excited to pursue different avenues of the story in the future.”

“The narrative leads, the writers we have – they’re all very excited to takeDestinyin a completely different approach with the help of [Luke Smith] on the Franchise team,” she said. The rest of Bungie’s representatives went on, explaining that withShadowkeep, Season of the Undying, andSeason of Dawn, all of the teams working on newDestinycontent have been collaborating more and more closely, allowing them to provide a more cohesive narrative with each new seasonal update. This has, according to Levine, created “an excitement in the team about where the future is going.”

Continuing off that point, Bungie community manager David “Deej” Dague encouraged players anticipatingDestiny 2’s future seasonsto have an open mind about the possibilities. “Players should always assume thatDestinyis going to change and evolve,” he said. “Players need to stay open-minded and flexible about how this world will serve them with different challenges, and the options they’ll have to create and optimize their own characters in the future.”
The language there is vague enough that that could mean anything ultimately, given all of the plot threads thatShadowkeepand the last two seasons have introduced, not to mention the plot threads subsequent seasons could introduce. For now at least, players eager to find out where the game’s story is going will have to settle for just enjoying the ride as it unfolds. That, and speculating aboutwhat to expect fromDestiny 2in the coming year.
At the very least, Bungie seems to have a clearer vision for what it wantsDestiny 2to be in the wake of its split from Activision and the launch ofShadowkeep. Not every change has been great, but all in all Season of the Undying andSeason of Dawn have been promising additions toDestiny 2. If Bungie continues on this trajectory with the next few seasons, players could be in for a great 2020.
Destiny 2is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
