In a conversation on Twitter, @t_NYC noted that this reboot was a scam because of how it has reverted contract terms.DeKnightagreed in his own words, stating, “It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to [the] first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!” In a follow-up post, DeKnight clarified that he supportsDaredevil: Born Againand hopes it does well. His criticism is directed at Disney’s methods to avoid paying original creatives or raising crew salaries.
DeKnight is not the first or only former member of theDaredevilfamily to raise issues with Disney taking over the popular property. One formercrew member calledDaredevil: Born Againa mistakeof massive proportions.Daredevil: Born Againmay be exactly as the title implies. It’s a play on Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) Catholic faith but demonstrates that this show will be nothing like the gritty Netflix series. The production has only brought back a few former cast members and none of the original employees of the series.
Netflix’sDaredevilwas the rare Marvel propertythat encouraged love and devotion from those who worked on it. The big franchise films appeal to mass audiences, but there is little room to inject creativity and thematic resonance. Along withJessica JonesandThe Punisher, Daredevil had an artful perspective woven into the narrative. It took on mature themes but showed the vigilantes as humans who did not always have an unimpeachable moral compass. The Netflix properties could get more creative with their stories, and to be canceled unceremoniously was only the first crime enacted against them.
WhenCox reprised his Daredevil role onShe-Hulk, it was a different character. A more carefree and mustard-colored interpretation of the character, Matt Murdock was less of what made him so compelling. This change also allowed Disney to cut previous creatives out of their contracts with the brand. It puts the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes under an even sharper microscope. According to DeKnight, this behavior has been going on for a long time, proving why these strikes are necessary.
