After a week of bizarre teaser videos, Activision has finally announcedCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warin an official capacity, with the trailer coming next Wednesday, August 26. Besides its Cold War setting, very little is known aboutCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warand what it will entail, but one leaker has made the claim that the new game will retain one ofModern Warfare’s most controversial features.
According to frequentCall of Dutyseries leaker Tom Henderson,Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwill use skill-based matchmakingin its versus multiplayer mode. According to Henderson,Black Ops Cold War’s SBMM is “EXACTLY” the same as the system used byModern Warfaredevelopers for that game’s multiplayer. This is no doubt going to disappoint some fans, though it should be stressed that SBMM has not actually been confirmed by Activision, Raven Software, or Treyarch, so fans should take this information with a grain of salt.

For the uninitiated, skill-based matchmaking, orSBMM, has been a very controversial topic for online multiplayer games in recent years. Its intention is so that players are constantly going against those of a similar skill level, meaning players are no longer put in lobbies where they are far superior to the competition or alternatively, far worse. Some players don’t like how SBMM makes every game “sweaty,” and others have criticized the impact it has on one’s enjoyment when playing in a party with a friend who is of a vastly different skill level. Regardless of how fans feel about SBMM, though, it looks like it’s here to stay.
But again, nothing is really known aboutCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayerin an official capacity. While the firstBlack Ops Cold Wartrailer has been revealed, it mostly consists of live-action clips of real-world historical events from the Cold War, with virtually no details about the gameplay.
While nothing official has been announced in regards toBlack Ops Cold War’s gameplay, fans can make a few educated guesses about what it will feature based on pastCall of Dutygames.Black Ops Cold Warhaving a single-player campaign is virtually guaranteed, as is its inclusion of the standardCall of Dutyversus multiplayer experience. It’s quite likely that the new game will have a co-op mode of some kind as well. Leakers have suggested thatBlack Ops Cold Warwill have Zombieslike past games in the series for its co-op mode, but that has yet to be confirmed.
