Black Cloverserves as a prime example that the “three-episode rule” is situational. In 2017, Pierrot started to adapt Yūki Tabata’s shonen manga, but the anime initially garnered a lot of criticism. Asta’s voice acting and the story’s pacing were the biggest sticking points, and they played a part in turningBlack Cloverinto something of a joke. However, the show pressed on and, eventually, found its footing, transforming into one of the bestmodern battle shonen anime. This turn of events probably did not surprise anyone familiar with the highly-regarded source material, and Tabata’s manga is still going strong almost a decade following its debut.Black Clover’s Black Bullsare nowadays nearly as iconic as the Straw Hats or Team 7.
As the story goes, Asta dreams of becoming the Wizard King, a goal that seems impossible for somebody who seems devoid of magical talent. While his tryout to join the Magic Knight does not seem to go well, he ends up “impressing” the Black Bulls' leader, Yami, and earns an invitation to join the dysfunctional squad. Supported by a group of ragtag knights who all have their eccentricities, Asta sets out on a journey to become stronger.

The Black Bulls are still going relatively strong in Yuki Tabata’s manga, although chapters have become a bit more inconsistent over the last year or so. In hope of an eventual return of the anime, the sections dedicated to Yami and Asta have been updated.

Yami Sukehiro
The Black Bulls' Captain
Yami is the leader of the Black Bulls and the person responsible for starting the squad and recruiting its members. Nearly always seen with a cigarette in his mouth, Yami is the definition of laissez-faire in most situations, often leaving his subordinates to handle messes rather than getting involved himself. However, he can be quite reckless and aggressive, especially when someone gets on his nerves.
Yami is kind of a weird one. He is not exactly nice to the rest of the Black Bulls, and he is more than willing to throw them into deep waters without much of a safety net. That said, Yami genuinely cares about them, despite being reluctant to show it directly, and most of his decisions are designed to bring the best out of the rest of the squad members.Yami is also ridiculously powerful thanks to his dark magic.
Asta
The Black Bulls' Heart
Asta leaves quite a first impression, particularly in the anime. Loud, passionate, and loud (yes, it needs to be stated twice),Black Clover’s protagonist is a dynamo who is pretty much always in motion, and his energy can be downright infectious. Ashe lacks an affinity for traditional magic, Asta focuses on improving his physical strength, all in the hope of becoming a Magic Knight and eventually the Wizard King. Despite bombing his entrance exam, Asta catches the attention of Yami, who has a thing for outcast idiots who do not know when to quit.
While he can be a lot during the first few episodes, Asta gradually morphs into a pretty fantastic shonen protagonist, one who brings out the best in the rest of the Black Bulls. He is funny, charming, periodically intelligent, and sweet, all the while having a fun combat style that allows for most of the best fights in the series.
Nacht Faust
The Black Bulls' Vice Captain
Nacht is a former noble and current vice-captain of the Black Bulls. Nacht is 29 and his birthday is April 30th. He is relatively tall, at about 5'11 in height. He has a well-defined moral code and relies upon logic and his own reasoning to get him through difficult situations.
Nacht has a twin named Morgen and received his grimoire when he was 15 years old, and his magic revolves around the use of shadows.Four devils give Nacht his power, endowing him with strength and magic ability.
Vanessa Enoteca
The Black Bulls' Witch
Vanessa is a witch with an eccentric personality and an affinity for liquor. Vanessa appears quite tall, but she is only about 5'7 without heels. She has earned the nickname of the Drunk Frenzy Witch due to her wild behavior and constant drinking.
Vanessa can be manipulative, lazy, and seductive, but she’s also smart and gets what she wants. Her magic revolves around the use of thread, and she can dodge enemies, heal allies, and damage foes with herthread magic. While initially coming across as one note, Vanessa’s backstory is explored during the Witches' Forest arc.
Charmy Pappitson
The Black Bulls' Bottomless Pit
Charmy is a 19-year-old dwarf-human who loves food and feels like a character froma shojo anime. She can change her appearance, transforming from a little girl to a mature young woman. Most of the time, Charmy is quite small, around 4'7 in height.
Charmy offers everyone around her food, often to the point of annoying them. She can also manipulate cotton to help transport and protect her squad or trap enemies. Her food magic is similar to Asta’s anti-magic in that it can absorb or undo other types of magic.
Gauche Adlai
The Black Bulls' Sister Complex
Gauche is a 19-year-old noble from the House Adlai. He is tall and slim, coming in at 5'11 in height. His features appear somewhat elf-like. He loves his younger sister Marie deeply and is passionate about protecting her at all costs, an affection that is mostly played as obsession and for laughs.
Gauche uses mirror magic in battle to create copies to confuse enemies, and he can also reflect light to blind enemies. Gauche’s magic is partly due to Drowa, the elf, possessing him.
Zora Ideale
The Black Bulls' Wildcard
Zora is a pale, red-haired character with eyebrow piercings and a unique mask worn across the lower half of his face. He is 25 years old and his birthday is December 19. Zora is 5'9 in height and has a slim, muscular build. He wears a lot of black clothing and is known for being witty, sly, and sometimes rude. Zora can create magical traps and use ash to defeat enemies in a fight.
Like Asta, Zora comes from a humble background and is from the rural countryside. Introduced quite late into the series,this Black Bull member is the most unpredictable of the bunch, and he shows very little respect to anyone, and his squad mates are barely exceptions.
Finral Roulacase
The Black Bulls' Fast Travel System
Finral has a noble pedigree from the House Vaude, a background that puts hefty expectations on his shoulders. While a member of the Black Bull squad, he mostly exists in the shadow of his younger brother, the Golden Dawn’s Langris. The 21-year-old loves the color green, and in social situations, Finral is a total flirt and seemingly enjoys being the center of attention.
Finral is practical when he needs to be, but he is overall energetic and outgoing. He is rather “girl-crazy,” a trait that has caused some characters to lose respect for him. However, he is also dependable and tends to be relied upon by Yami, even if the latter tends to use him as a glorified teleporter.
Gordon Agrippa
The Black Bulls' Lowkey Funniest Character
Gordon is perhaps most easily recognized by his signature gothic makeup. He paints his nails black and has been doing his makeup in this goth style since childhood. Gordon is 26 years old, making him one of theBlack Bull squad’s oldest characters. Gordon is very tall, measuring nearly 6'2 in height, which also means he is one of the tallest characters in the squad.
Compared to the manga, Gordon gets more characterizationearly on in the anime version ofBlack Clover, and his somber demeanor and Gothic aesthetic echo his shy personality. Gordon craves to be heard and to make a connection, something he continued to struggle with even after joining the squad. However, he finds that rapport with Asta, although the latter is not fully aware that they are best friends.
Noelle Silva
The Black Bulls' Tsundere (& Much More)
The Sea Goddess, Noelle can transform and manipulate water, although she historically struggles to control her magic. Despite coming from a prestigious family and (somewhat) looking down on the likes of Asta, Noelle ends up in the Black Bull Royal Knights squad, a position she takes a while to accept. She is 15 years old and her birthday is November 15th. Noelle is quite small, standing at 5'3 in height.
Because she is from a noble family, Noelle has a snooty demeanor and a vain outlook on the world. Despite her vanity and air of self-importance, she is actually insecure due to her inability to control magic, a situation that theanime explores to great effect in its later arcs. Also, Noelle develops feelings for Asta, and she “hides” them pretty well.
