The Hunter class from Dread Hunger.

One such game isDread Hunger, which is a unique indie survival game that puts eight Explorers inside a ship that traverses the unforgiving Arctic. But,Dread Hungeris more than a simple survival game since players will need to choose a class carefully since each one has a specific set of skills that’ll ensure their survival.

8The Hunter

Players familiar withRust(one of the most influential survival games) will know how effective Bear Traps can be in neutralizing other players, and The Hunter starts with two. With that being said, The Hunter is the best class to use if a player’s sole goal is to eliminate all other players from the ship.

Besides starting with the Bear Traps, The Hunter class has a Passive Ability that increases harvest speed from all corpses (including fellow crew members). But, killing the entire crew isn’t the best way to play the game since it’ll make surviving the journey more complicated.

The Cook class from Dread Hunger.

7The Cook

The Cook is often overlooked since his Passive Ability is limited to the Stove, which isn’t always available during a playthrough. Despite that, The Cook can be helpful as he can cook food 30% faster than other classes, which is essential if players want to avoid suffering from the side effects of hunger.

The Cook also starts with a Meat Cleaver, which is the perfect tool to chop up animal meat or that of his fellow crewmates if the going gets tough, and it will once the food supplies run out.

The Engineer class in Dread Hunger.

6The Engineer

The Engineer plays a vital role inDread Hungersince their Passive Ability increases repair speed by 30%, which is crucial whenever the vessel has a hole. Furthermore, The Engineer can craft items faster (which is always a good thing in survival games) than the other classes, which can be used to their advantage while fighting Thralls.

Unfortunately, The Engineer’s main source of damage comes from Barrel Bombs, and that damage depends on how much Gunpowder the player has on hand, which is usually never enough. Moreover, other players can defuse a Barrel Bomb, rendering it useless, which is why this class isn’t ranked any higher.

The Navigator class from Dread Hunger.

5The Navigator

Undoubtedly, The Navigator is the most underrated class inDread Hungersince, at first glance, his Passive Ability and starting items seem lackluster compared to the other classes. But, in reality, The Navigator can prove extremely useful throughout the long journey through the Arctic since he can use his Spyglass to check the health of his fellow crew members, see if a Storage Container is empty, or eavesdrop on conversations.

But, of course, how the player wants to use the Spyglass’s information depends on whether they want to help their team or sabotage the expedition.

4The Royal Marine

The Flintlock Pistol and Musket are some of the most powerful weapons inDread Hungersince they can quickly kill a deadly Polar Bear or even a Thrall. And The Royal Marine starts with a Flintlock Pistol and two extra bullets, which can guarantee an early game kill or two.

The Royal Marine’s Passive Ability increases reload speed on firearms, making them already an even more deadly class. Unfortunately, finding enough ammunition to keep firearms always loaded is challenging since bullets are hard to come by, making his Passive Ability less valuable than other Passives.

3The Chaplain

Another element ofDread Hungerthat drawssimilarities to other brutal survival gamesis that of looting rare items to increase the chances of survival. And that’s where The Chaplain comes in handy since his passive increases the likelihood of finding trinkets while looting by 7%.

On top of that, The Chaplain starts with a Shovel and Skeleton Key, which are essential for looting rare items. The Shovel can help players dig up buried Strong Boxes, while the Skeleton Key can either be used to open the Strong Box or revive a downed crew member.

2The Doctor

Even though the main objective ofDread Hungeris to survive the voyage at whatever cost, there are some reasons why players should think twice before betraying their fellow crewmates, the main reason being that helping them out may earn the player more EXP points at the end of the game.

And for that reason, The Doctor is a decent pick for players that want their crew to survive since he comes equipped with a healing Syringe. Moreover, his Passive Ability increases revive speed and efficiency of healing items by 60%. And if push comes to shove, players can use his Meat Cleaver to fend off greedy crewmates.

1The Captain

Even though The Captain may seem weaker than the other classes due to his fragile demeanor, he’s the best class to ensure a player’s survival. For starters, The Captain starts with a Sabre, which can deal an astonishing 18 DMG per hit and can even chop limbs & the head off of player bodies if its durability is maintained.

Furthermore, his Passive Ability increases all survival stats (up to 30% at max level) the longer he remains on the ship, similar to Woodlengs fromDon’t Starve Together. And sinceDread Hungeris based around staying on board the vessel, choosing The Captain is a no-brainer for those who wish to survive.
