While many first-person shooter gamers are gearing up forCall of Duty: WW2, others are still pouring into last year’s World War 1 title,Battlefield 1. According to Electronic Arts,Battlefield 1has gained over 2 million additional players since March 2017, bringing the unique player count to 21 million for the shooter.

The success ofBattlefield 1isn’t too surprising considering the massive hype EA built around the title before launch, and the strong performance the game has had since release. Prior to launch,Battlefield 1’s announcement trailer set numerous records in both views and likes prior to the game’s release. Once the game launched in October 2016, it sported a player base double the size ofBattlefield 4at launch, andoutsold bothBattlefield 4andBattlefield Hardlinecombined in its first week sales.

Battlefield 1’s sales also eclipsed many of the games released in 2016, beating out all other titles except forCall of Duty: Infinite Warfarein sales for the year. And many gamers still debate that placement consideringInfinite Warfare’s sales were heavily boosted by the addition ofModern Warfare Remastered, which was only available alongsideInfinite Warfareat the time.

WhileBattlefield 1has certainly had its problems, developer DICE has worked diligently to provide regular updates and fixes to the game, making it better with each passing month. Plus, as gamers have discovered variousEaster Eggs and other hidden gemsin the game,Battlefield 1has continued to maintain steady attention in the months since its release.

This is all very good news for EA and DICE as the duo prepares to releaseStar Wars Battlefront 2later this year. The sequel to 2015’sBattlefrontpromises to ramp up the experience for gamers with a single player campaign and more expansive options within multiplayer. WithBattlefield 1having so much success, there’s little doubtBattlefront 2will perform well.

The continued success ofBattlefield 1should also aid in the sales of the next DLC forBattlefield 1:In the Name of the Tsar. There’s still no official release date for the expansion, but withBattlefield 1continuing to grow its player base, there will undoubtedly be a healthy number of players interested in the DLC.

Battlefield 1is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
