Supergiant Games, the creators ofBastionandTransistor, announce their third project: a party-based role-playing game calledPyrefor PC and PlayStation 4.
Indie studioSupergiant Gameshas unveiled its third project to the world. EntitledPyre, the game is looking to carry on the tradition of the company’s previous titles in terms of art style, atmosphere, and focus on storytelling, but it looks to be trading the hack-and-slash approach ofBastionandTransistorfor party-based role-playing game elements.
Pyre, which will be playable at PAX East, is set in a mystical land called Downside. Players take control of an exile that joins forces with other exiles in an attempt to complete the “Rites.” InPyre, Rites refers to a competition between exiles that, if completed, will free them of their transgressions. Besides these details, much of the game’s story remains a mystery.
Supergiant Games has said that player choice will have an effect on the game’s story, which is something the developer has explored before. In order to make player choice more meaningful, Supergiant plans on fillingPyrewith a large cast of characters that players will bond with over the course of the adventure.

Players will travel with these companions in a “blackwagon” across Downside. Sometimes other parties of exiles that are also trying to complete the Rites will be encountered, which in turn will activate a battle. Supergiant hasn’t expanded much on the combat side ofPyreoutside of what’s shown in the trailer, but it appears to be an action-RPG, perhaps with a dash of squad commands or tactics thrown in for good measure.
WithPyreon display at PAX East, more information about how the game’s combat works will presumably come to light soon. In the meantime, gamers should pay attention toPyre, as it stands a good chance of being a high quality game. After all, Supergiant Games is 2 for 2 when it comes to releasing critically-acclaimed titles, with bothBastionandTransistorwinning numerous awardsat the time of their release.
In fact, ourBastionreviewawarded the game the ever-elusive perfect score. OurTransistorreviewwas positive as well, and so there’s no reason to think thatPyrewill disappoint. Supergiant Games has a proven track record of putting out high quality, atmospheric video games, and judging by its trailer,Pyrehas potential to reach those same heights. With a release planned for next year, expect to see more ofPyrein the coming months.
Pyrewill be available for PC and PS4 in 2017.
