The last episode focuses deeply on the drama aspect of the story. It’s not bad, but it’s not that good either. Sure, it certainly helps with the overall progression of the story, but for fans that love the hilarious comedy that were presentedin the earlier episodes, episode 8 was not a fun episode to watch. A balance between the comedy and drama is certainly needed.
Now we come to episode 9. While it won’t be a “make it or break it” episode for the series, it will still be an episode that would set the fans’ expectations from here on out. However, judging from the trend of this series that loves to alternate between total drama and total comedies every several episodes, it is highly likely that this one will be the opposite of episode 8.

In episode 8 ofA Couple of Cuckoos, we see Sachi decide to live in the same house as Nagi and Erika. She said the reason was because their house was still under renovation, so she had to live in a small apartment with her parents, which was certainly not an ideal environment to study. Moving out to a bigger house with her brother and sister seemed like a logical thing to do.
Erika was overjoyed because she finally got to spend more time with her long-lost sister. Nagi, on the other hand, was furious with her sudden decision. He promised their parents to force Sachi to be back home by the following morning. However, when he heard about the real reason why Sachi decided to move in with them,Nagi can’t help but soften upand let Sachi stay to live together with them.
The Kuroshio currents beckon to me?
The story of this episode can be divided into three parts. The first one is about Nagi going on a date with Hiro to an amusement park. Here we see Hiro’s wild side. She loves roller coasters and other kinds of adrenaline-inducing rides and will line up to ride them over and over again. Not even Nagi can keep up with her overflowing energy.
The second part of the story is aboutErika and Sachi spending some quality time together. Because when Sachi finds out that Nagi is going on a date, she is livid. To cheer her up, Erika joined Sachi as she does all kinds of activities that can usually liven up her mood, such as going to the baseball center or public bath house.

The last part is all about Nagi, Erika, and Sachi going on a fishing trip with Yohei,Nagi’s adoptive fatherand Erika and Sachi’s biological father. Erika and Sachi immediately filled with the spirit of competition, especially when Yohei promised to award 1000 yen to whoever can catch the biggest fish. Meanwhile, Nagi is experiencing terrible seasickness. He keeps on complaining all the time. However, when the trip ends, everybody, including Nagi, has a good time and feels rejuvenated.
Deepening The Relationship
As mentioned above, this episode is all about bonding anddeepening the relationship between the characters. Nagi and Hiro, Erika and Sachi, and the father and his children. We manage to see different sides of each character that we never get to see thus far.
Hiro’s wild side, Sachi’s sporty side, Erika’s competitive side, Nagi’s miserable side, and Yohei doing his job as a father. By putting the characters in various situations that are unfamiliar to the viewers, we get to see them in a new light. It is a character development done in a fun and entertaining way.
Reclaiming The Comedy
One of the major problems of the last episode is the lack of comedy. It was a full-blown drama with little to no comedy in sight. Episode 9, however, is the total opposite of that. There are humorous moments splattered everywhere throughout this episode.
It is impossible to not smile and chucklewhen watching this episode. Some of you might even burst out a laugh or two. What’s even better is the fact that in the midst of all of that hilarity, there is still a proper story and character development going on. This is the episode whereA Couple of Cuckoosmanage to reclaim their comedy.
From what we’ve seen of the series thus far, it seems likeA Couple of Cuckoosis dedicated to delivering a series of episodes with alternating tone and mood. You will have a couple of episodes filled with humor that can make you smile from start to end, and then you’ll get a full-blown dramatic romance for several subsequent episodes.
There are some rare episodes where you get a relatively balanced helping of drama and comedy. If this is the kind of thing that you like from this series, then you’ll have a fun experience watching this episode. And judging from the trend so far, the next episode will likely be a fun one as well.
